Promoting Sustainable Livelihoods Foundation (PSLF) has successfully installed a solar based water treatment plant in Pankhali 2 Government Primary School at Dacope, Khulna Funded by NABIC inaugurated 12 May, 2019. The plant serves 500 liter water per hour and daily minimum production is 3000 liter.
Selection of School:
Pankhali 2 Government School were selected based on the following criteria –
- Availability of drinking water and its source in the concerned region.
- Availability of power in the area.
- Distance from the school to nearest fresh water source
- Condition of the available water
- Ease of transport
- Number of students in the school.
- Number of household surrounding the school.
School and Community Information:
The Pankhali-2 govt. primary school is located at Dacope upazila under Khulna district which is 30 km (approx.) far from Khulna town and 83 km from Sundarban- the world largest mangrove forest in Bay of Bengal. Total area of Dacope (including part of Sundarban) is 991.57 sq. km having total population of 152,316 with population density 533 in sq. km. According to World Health Organization (WHO) report, four out of five cases of child mortality in the areas are related to contaminated drinking water.
At present, there are 450 school children, 20 teachers and staff in the Pankhali-2 govt. primary and high school who are receiving safe drinking water from our water purification system.
Sources of water before installing RO water treatment plant:
- Rainwater harvesting during rainy season is the traditional water source in this region, and excess rain water is preserved for the dry season. During hot dry months, the preserved rain water is utilized for drinking purposes only.
- Local businesses provide drinking water by purchasing purified water from a nearby market, transporting and re-selling to local market at the rate of Tk 1 per liter. Local consumers buy this water when their preserved rain water is depleted.
- Most people drink water from deep tube wells instead of buying when rain water became unavailable during the hot summer months. As tube well water has high salinity, arsenic, iron and dissolved impurities, often villagers suffer from diarrhea or other water borne diseases.
- Mainly, tube well water is used for household work and sanitation throughout the year.
- Ponds, rivers and canals are the source of water for bathing and hygiene purposes.
